Mr. Lad entered politics accidentally. His maiden entry was by contesting By-elections for the Sandur Town Panchayat. His first attempt was unsuccessful. He again stood for the Panchayat Elections from two places and won both the seats. He was also instrumental in his party obtaining the majority in Panchayat Elections. This heralded the beginning of his political career.

In 2004, Mr. Lad won from Sandur in Bellary District with a huge margin of 35,000 votes. He was one of the youngest members of the Legislative Assembly at the age of 29. He was accepted by his people as their able representative for the hard work and the support his family has been providing even before entering active politics.

His latest victory came in the 2008, Karnataka Assembly Elections where he won in Kalghatgi, Dharwad District.
